When to Consider A/C Repair?

Your air conditioner won’t turn on.

The first thing you should do is check your thermostat: if the batteries are dead, all you have to do is replace them. If they’re not, make sure your thermostat is set to the cooling setting, and reset your circuit breaker. A larger issue will require you to call in an expert.

Your unit is not blowing cold air, or won’t get cold enough.

How long has it been since you’ve changed your air filter? Your air conditioner can’t blow cold air through your home if it’s blocked by a dirty air filter. A dirty filter can also freeze your condenser and lessen its cooling power. Changing your air filter once per month helps your air conditioner continue to blow cold air.

Your unit smells strange/bad.

This is typically caused by water accumulating in your air conditioner’s drain pan, drip lines or ducts. This can cause fungus or mildew to grow, which can cause respiratory issues with you and your family. If you run into this issue, it will be best to call in a professional to have your air conditioner’s lines and ducts thoroughly cleaned.

Your air conditioner makes loud/strange noises.

Different problems can cause a wide range of sounds to come from your air conditioning unit. A hissing sound is likely evidence of a refrigerant leak. Loud thumping or banging sounds can show an issue with your blower or motor assembly. A buzzing sound may indicate your unit has faulty electrical components. Your air conditioner will tell you when something is wrong.

Your air conditioner is leaking water or refrigerant.

Water leaking from your unit on a hot or humid day is normal due to condensation; it is even normal for water to leak on a cool day if ice is melting off of it. This can also be caused by things like a dirty air filter, your unit being improperly installed, low coolant levels and more. When your air conditioner’s coolant starts leaking, your unit will not function properly. The temperature in your home will vary and not be accurate. Refrigerant leaks can result in your system not running efficiently and using a lot of power, which will cause a spike in your electricity bill. It may also cause your coil to freeze, as well as compressor damage. The location of the leak may be hard to determine, so it is important to have an expert examine and diagnose the problem.
